Beach yoga is the best yoga!
It’s messy, you get covered in sand, and you’ll probably wobble a bit when trying to perfect your Garudasana, but for me there is no better place to practice than on the beach, next to the ocean, under the sky, looking out to the great abyss of ocean-ness.
I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last few months travelling around India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia, and on my way I’ve been lucky enough to teach some wonderful, amazing people some yoga on the beach.
I’d print out my flyers, hand them out down the beach, and wait nervously at 8am to see if anyone turns up. Luckily for me, they have been. But…… i have also had a few people look at me like I’m a crazy woman, 8am? But I’m on holiday, that’s far too early. On the beach?it’s too hard to practice on the beach, I can’t focus on the sand, it’s not flat, it’s too hot, people might watch me. Seriously!!
If I could practice in one place forever it would be by the ocean, listening to the sound of the waves, washing over me, removing any thought from the day, or the previous day, or tomorrow, totally relaxing my body. Who cares if you wobble a bit in your tree pose, yoga isn’t about perfection, it’s not about people looking at you and judging you, it’s about how you feel when you practice, and how can you not feel amazing with the sand between your toes and that light ocean breeze on your face.
Practice what you love, where you love it. Live in the moment, and don’t let anyone judge you, and more to the point don’t judge yourself. I loved teaching on the beach, we all sweated a little and smiled a lot.
